YouTube vs. TV

One thing I'm looking forward to about YouTube is getting news from sources that aren't owned by multinational corporations. I've had this opinion lately that public opinion really is swayed by the media, not vice versa, and I'm really annoyed by it. I feel like sometimes I can see a PR campaign a mile away, and while I'm sitting there thinking, "How can anyone buy into this crap?", the media promotes it by saying "People are really buying into this and it's taking off!" So, even if people aren't into it yet, the media says other people are and it sways them.

As an aside, I must say that lately I feel like I can't describe my thoughts in sentences nearly as well as I used to, but that's another story... Anyway, point form might be my new way of explaining things.

Back to my main point, here's what I mean:

1. Slimy politician does/says something wrong/stupid.
2. Everyone, absolutely everyone, hates him for it.
3. The media says "66% of the population still loves him."
4. Then everyone sways and the pressure is lifted because people feel alone in their opinion and want to be part of that 66%.
5. Repeat.

I remember when we voted our Minority gov't in the last election. Favour went from Paul Martin to Steven Harper when the media shifted from focusing on Harper's extremist religious views to Martin's government's corruption. I remember how black and white it became, like "Martin is corrupt, get him out!" No one remembers what Harper's party did a decade earlier, they just want someone new. And it seemed to go in Harper's direction when I heard this quote, "The momentum is huge and it looks like Harper will indeed be the next Prime Minister."

Now, I heard this quote on some Canadian news channel while Harper's gov't still seemed to be trailing. But I think a quote like that gives an impression to Joe Everyman that he should jump on the bandwagon. And it looks like he did.

Anyway, I'm annoyed by the news because a lot of it is just someone's perspective, not the actual facts. I know YouTube is the same in that regard, but I'm looking forward to uncensored world news, not this corporation approved mediocre crap we have to put up with now.
