Murder City Sparrows show last night

Eugie and I went to the Powerplant last night. Was a good evening overall, except was it F*CK*N* COLD. Yeesh.

Anyway, Drive By Punch played a good set and our good friends the Murder City Sparrows were very energetic and fun. While their recordings definitely show their ideas off, their live show shows why the ideas are good. I feel sorry for all the MCS fans that have only to put up with the album and videos, and don't get to experience an actual show. Jay Sparrow's personality is front and center, and he makes you think of classic, early, early, early rock and roll, the kind that kids from any generation could enjoy, while at the same time he brings a modern, edgy sensibility that makes it relevant today and definitely tomorrow.

As a frontman myself, I love watching other lead singers do their thing. I'm always analyzing, studying, and even judging... I'm always impressed by the veterans of the industry. Their comfort level onstage comes from experience and they can enjoy being silent sometimes between songs and not having to be "on" the whole time. Jay brings a comfort level to the stage that I've only seen in guys twice his age.

Jay was born only 6 hours or so before me by the way. He's my elder, I respect that. I'm sure I'll always be playing catch up with him. No matter what I do or try, he'll always be 6 hours ahead. So, today's blog is dedicated to Jay Sparrow. Thanks for keepin it real.
