Well it was a venue with the ability to handle 700 people. The sound system they had set up made us think they were planning on filling the place. It was a pro set-up all the way. People were going to be bussed in from Calgary and Red Deer. First gig in a while with a fog machine... sweet.
Then, our set time comes around and there's still only a handful of folks there. We're reassured that people are on the way. So we wait a little while longer. Meanwhile my friend Colin went to get a hotel room.
Several minutes go by and we get the nod to start playing... as it turns out, none of the busses are going to come - we were given no reason. But, the people that showed paid money to see a rock show, so we gave them a rock show.
Some people recognized our song You and Me from Sonic FM, which was cool.
Although the crowd was small and the room was large, they were very loud and enthusiastic. A very very great crowd.
We ended our set and as it turns out, my friend Colin missed our whole set because he locked his keys in his still running truck. We sold a lot of t-shirts and CDs and then Joshua's Habit took the stage. They invited me up to play bass on Tweeter and The Monkey Man as their last song, while their lead singer Trav went nuts now that he could move around!
After the show, we went to a bar called Hay City (which is nicknamed Hay Shitty or possibly "Hey Shitty!"). Actually, the bar's name had changed but people still called it that anyway.
After several, several rounds, we capped off the evening with a visit to Tim Horton's, where I had an extra large double double and some timbits, and argued about bands with my friend Colin (which we do regularly).
The Joshua's Habit boys were way too fuckin nice. Motley Stu their road manager is a stand up dude. A huge shout out to The Habit - Gooch, Trav, Whiskey, we drank a small town dry one fine February evening...
We're competing with Joshua's Habit in Toronto for the Canadian Radiostar Finals. They won the regionals in Calgary and we won in Edmonton. Regardless of who wins, we're gonna represent Alberta in T.O. and have an insane time, if last night's gig was any indication.
This was my first taste of an out-of-town gig in a long time... I used to be on the road all the time but it's been several years. It was a nice little refresher course to get us ready for when the longer treks start. The reality of me being a touring musician is kicking in, and the downside of being away from family and friends for extended periods is on my mind more and more. I laugh at the concept of my missing out on all this stuff for the sake of "rock and roll." It's been a dream since as long as I can remember and now that certain parts of that dream are coming true, the reality of the sacrifices I have to make are very prevalent.
We're planning on making the most of our opportunities though and I've learned from seeing my favourite bands burn themselves out that we don't have to get crazy and get caught up in any bullshit. We're gonna be those "balanced" rock stars you hear so much about.
By the way - Able Day Fashion Show is our official first single and it's hitting the airwaves across Canada in March. Stay tuned for updates on how to request it.
Also, MARCH 7th!!!! Show at Urban Lounge - part of the Kokanee Freeride Contest. $5 advance tickets from us. We'll get em to some locations too.
