MSO will be playing at Howler's Lounge in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on April 13th with Social Code. The next day we'll be rockin in Jasper and the next day we'll be playing the Kokanee Freeride. This weekend will be awesome!!
This Friday we're doing an interview at Nait and getting together with Dave from MFC to discuss the tag music for fight night...
Other than that, no real business other than our song getting featured all over the country. That's pretty cool. It's funny though because while a few years ago I would've been thrilled with getting features, now we need more than that simply from a bottom line standpoint. We need more than the odd play here and there to get people through the doors at our shows out of town. Things are building so I'm stoked, but it's kind of a "cart beside the horse" scenario as Phil Anderson put it. Not one thing is leading the situation - a whole lot of things need to happen simultaneously for something to really take off. And we're right at the beginning of it all. Pretty exciting but nerve wracking. In the meantime, I do have to sit back and look at what we've done though... It's been a fun year so far in that regard. 2 huge contest wins... both ended up in trips out of town and our comfort zone. both resulted in relationships that will help propel us further... I think Eug and I are really growing into the duo thing... we both like having guitars and stuff but lately the duo shows have been so intense and confident... I think at first I was playing them like I had something to prove... now I'm just enjoying the freedom of what we can get away with and we've only just touched on that freedom. Eug brings some amazing talent to the table and he always delivers. I'm stoked about playing often enough that we can really stretch ourselves and dig into the 10+ years of playing together so when we jam, you're not only hearing some improvisation between 2 able musicians, but you're hearing improvisation that stems from over a decade of being close friends... there's energy and history in the notes we play. Now, we had that as a trio, BUT, the thing we have now is now chord progressions to agree on. I can really wank and we never have to nod at eachother to communicate when the bridge or chorus is... now the trick is to do what every touring musician has to figure out... make it fresh for yourself every night, but not destroy the song so much that the audience doesn't recognize it.
wow, i'm in a ranty mood.
anyway, that's just some thoughts for an otherwise uneventful tuesday evening. Although if I'm being honest, I'll add that it's about time we get to play with SoCo!!!!! We've known Ben since our MacEwan days so it's nice to finally play a show together. (That said, I did play a show with them at the Urban Lounge in 2000 when they were still Fifth Season and we were Cousin Henry, but it was eons ago) I'm stoked nonetheless. Oh yeah, and it's my first Grande Prairie show since 1998!
