Well I was pleasantly surprised when I heard in the line for the show that Pilot Speed (formerly Pilate) was opening for Mute Math tonight. I'd heard about Pilot Speed's live show as being good. Their songs come across well live for sure. I bought a t-shirt.
Mute Math was impressive - now, not as impressive as Linkin Park (still in awe of that show), but good at not only playing their songs, but really finding different ways of entertaining the crowd. Subtle things like using the keyboard stool as a percussion instrument. You also can't go wrong with a key-tar!
Good musicianship all around and good songs. If you haven't checked out Mute Math, do so. Especially if you're in any way into U2, The Killers, Coldplay, and Radiohead. To me, they're almost an equal blend of those 4 bands. I like the low end in their album as well - and the over-compressed/slightly distorted drum grooves are very tasty.
Also ran into Kevin from Portal, Steve Derpack of JCL Productions (and This Civil Twilight & Molly's Reach), and Jason Manning from Sonic FM - hard to chat with the loud music but it's good to run into some good local music industry peeps.
Also, we spotted a guy in the audience with a My Sister Ocean t-shirt and it wasn't me or Eug! Gotta love that!
Also heard today that the old Rebar on Whyte Ave will be doing live music - it's called The Pawn Shop. Looking forward to playing there fairly soon!
Winnipeg is still spinning MSO quite a bit!! We want to get the spins up all across the nation so hassle your local station - do it!
